Last year, I decided to create a schmooze tradition that would live beyond my reign as coordinator of the Westside Illustrators... a lofty goal indeed.

Anyway, it is Schmaldecott season once again, when our Westside Illustrators will pit ourselves against the rest of the galaxy and attempt to forecast the actual 2015 Caldecott Book Medalists.  We each pick 1 winner and 4 honors... Though last year my radar was slightly askew, this year I think I've got it down pat!

Aside from setting art goals for the new year, we devoted much of this month's schmooze to examining 2014 contenders. Here's my picks...

The Right Word: Roget and His Thesaurus illustrated by Melissa Sweet, written by Jen Bryant

Chose this picture book as my Caldecott Medal winner.  I admit I am smitten with the art of Melissa Sweet and this could be her year. A great topic in a year craving common core material, this is presented in that fun, quirky Melissa Sweet style.  Roget is such a fascinating character and great back matter fleshes out the man and his contrbutions.  Absolutely intrigued by this book!

 Gravity by Jason Chin

This is one beautifully illustrated book.  Science, common core, young kids, a perfect combination and a gift for educators.  Would have appreciated this book when I was a kid, terrified that one day I would just float away.  Jason Chin may be an honoree this year.

Firefly July by Paul Janeczko, illustrated by Melissa Sweet

Thirty six very short poems introduce the seasons on a whole new level ... Meliisa Sweet's cool artwork...  A charming combination of words and images treat the senses like a good poem should.  Watercolor, gouache and mixed media keep the eye looking for more.  What a great introduction to classic poetry.
A delightful presentation!

The Farmer and the Clown by Marla Frazee

This book is of particular interest to many in my schmooze.  Marla is a friend of many L.A. illustrators, teaching at Art Center and speaking at various local workshops and conferences. I actually had a portfolio review with her this summer.  Having heard her speak about the origins of this story we all appreciate the love and thought she infuses in her books. This one is a winner!

Albie's First Word: A Tale Inspired by Albert Einstein's Childhood by Jacqueline Tourville, art by Wynne Evans

A delightful story, beautifully illustrated and  historical fiction!  Based on his sister's accounts, this is a glimpse into three year old Albie Einstein. Delayed speech concerned his parents, and were told by the doctor to have him experience new things. That he did, and as we know,  he eventually had the last word!   Love this book!
